Many people come across the term "grid pavers" and are not quite sure what it covers. The answer is simple: grid pavers are essentially grass grid paving. The name comes from the grid-like openings in the moulded concrete element, in which grass can grow freely — so you get a green surface and a load-bearing pavement at the same time.
Two in one
What makes grid pavers special is that they satisfy two normally mutually exclusive needs at once. On the one hand, they provide a firm, trafficable surface a car can stand or drive on. On the other, grass grows in the openings, so the surface stays green, blends into the look of the garden and lets rainwater soak through into the ground.
Where do we use them?
- Driveways: particularly in the wheel tracks, or across the whole surface.
- Occasionally used car parks: where you do not want a large sealed concrete surface.
- Fire-brigade access routes and service roads: which must carry loads but are rarely used.
- Sloping, erosion-prone surfaces: where the grid holds the soil in place — very useful after the torrential autumn rains.
Plastic or concrete version?
Grid pavers are made either from lightweight recycled plastic or from solid concrete. The plastic version is lighter and quicker to install, ideal for lighter loads; the concrete one is heavier and more durable, for higher demands. The choice depends on the expected loading. Why is it good for the environment?
Unlike sealed pavements, grid pavers let rainwater through, reduce surface run-off and urban heating, and make the surroundings greener. That is exactly why more and more town councils prefer them over fully concreted surfaces, and they can help meet the permeable-surface requirements of a building licence.
Grid pavers are, in short, a clever compromise for anyone who does not want to choose between a green surface and usability — you get both in one.
