The special demands of industrial pavements
In industrial yards, logistics sites and loading areas the pavement carries far greater loads than an ordinary car park. Lorries, forklifts, lifting platforms and static loads – all of these require a properly dimensioned layer build-up; a generic solution is not enough.
With a faulty base or pavers that are too thin, rutting, settlement and breakage appear within 1–2 years. That is why industrial areas call for engineering design and an experienced contractor.

With high axle loads (lorries, heavy plant), engineering design in line with the Spanish PG-3 specifications and technical recommendations for pavements is required, together with on-site bearing-capacity testing via the Ev2 modulus (plate load test).
Laying pattern in industrial areas
In industrial areas an interlocking laying pattern (herringbone, interlocking grid) must be used, as it resists shear forces far better. A simple stretcher bond is for pedestrian surfaces; it is not recommended for industrial traffic.
When is block paving the right choice for an industrial area?
- Warehouse yards where access to buried services is also needed.
- Low-to-medium-speed lorry traffic (0–20 km/h).
- Loading areas where repairability and modular replacement matter.
- When appearance also counts (company headquarters, representative logistics entrance).
When is asphalt or concrete better?
- With extreme axle loads (80–100+ tonnes) → concrete.
- Large, continuous surfaces with fast construction schedules → asphalt.
- High-speed internal roads → asphalt.
