The main reason concrete block paving has replaced the plain grey concrete footpath is modern manufacturing technology, which guarantees uniform, controlled quality to the UNE-EN 1338 standard, together with its practicality and remarkably varied appearance. On a properly built base, block paving carries its load for decades and does not flake or crack the way a poorly cured concrete slab does. But which paver type should you choose? Let us look at the main criteria.
By thickness
- Around 4 cm: for pedestrian areas, patio-terraces and garden paths.
- 6 cm: the classic choice for car traffic – driveways and yards.
- 8 cm: heavy loads, lorry traffic, industrial yards.
By shape
The range of formats runs from the classic rectangle and square, through interlocking wave-edged blocks (bone or double-T shapes), to combination systems assembled from several sizes. Interlocking blocks grip each other along their toothed edges, so they resist lateral forces particularly well – ideal for heavily trafficked surfaces.
By surface finish
- Smooth: clean, modern, easy to keep tidy.
- Aged/tumbled: rustic, old-stone character.
- Washed/exposed aggregate: a natural, more slip-resistant surface – very useful on ramps and around pools.
- Surface-treated (impregnated): more stain-resistant, with colour that lasts longer under the intense Andalusian sun.
Colour and manufacturer
Colours range from grey through sand and terracotta to anthracite, and on to shaded multi-colour blends. Each manufacturer works with its own product families, shapes and finishes, so it pays to compare the options within your chosen brand's range – and wherever possible to look at real samples in daylight: under the Málaga sun, light tones reflect more heat, while dark tones set off the greenery beautifully.
The right paver type always comes down to the use: the load it must carry, the atmosphere you want and the maintenance you are willing to do. Settle those three questions and the enormous choice suddenly becomes far more manageable.
