The 5 cm thick paving block is something of a golden mean between the thin 4 cm pedestrian paver and the 6 cm block rated for vehicles. It works very well for garden paths and walkways around the house, footpaths, promenades, seating areas, courtyards and patio-terraces, and also for forming the paved surround of a swimming pool.
What is it ideal for?
- Footpaths and walkways: more than enough load capacity for foot traffic.
- Cycle surfaces: carries the load of a bicycle without any trouble.
- Patio-terraces and seating areas: a stable, durable surface under garden furniture.
- Pool surrounds: where no cars drive but a firm surface is needed.
Why do people choose 5 cm?
Where 4 cm already feels marginal (say, on an intensively used garden path) but 6 cm would be unnecessary and more expensive, 5 cm is a sound compromise. It is slightly thicker, so it feels more solid underfoot, while the price and weight remain favourable. If you are weighing up thicknesses, our paver thickness guide covers every case.
Installation
A 5 cm paver is laid on a bedding course just like any other: a compacted load-spreading layer of crushed-stone sub-base, a screeded bedding layer of fine gravel, then the blocks with 3–5 mm joints filled with jointing sand. A fall to shed rainwater and a kerb edge restraint are just as essential here as anywhere else.
The 5 cm thick paver is, in short, a versatile choice for any pedestrian or cycle surface — used in the right place, it offers an excellent balance of load capacity, price and ease of handling.
