A cement-treated base — often called soil-cement, cement-bound granular material or simply "lean concrete" — is a mix of aggregate with far less cement than conventional concrete, with an earth-moist consistency. Because of the lower cement content, its compressive strength and load-bearing capacity are below those of ordinary concrete, and it is not fluid but crumbly-moist. So what is it good for under block paving?
What is a cement-treated base used for?
The cement-treated base is used as a load-bearing base layer, to strengthen the formation, typically under heavily loaded surfaces. It provides a more stable, stiffer base than a plain crushed-stone (zahorra) layer, while being cheaper and simpler to handle than structural concrete. Thanks to its earth-moist consistency it can be spread and compacted with a plate compactor or roller, with no formwork required. When is it worth using?
- Heavily loaded surfaces: lorry traffic, industrial yards and warehouse aprons, where a crushed-stone base alone would fall short.
- Weak subgrade: where the ground on its own does not provide a stable enough formation — something verified, for example, with the plate load test (Ev2 modulus).
- The need for a rigid base: where you do not want the base to settle over time.
Cement-treated base or crushed stone?
For most garden, pedestrian and car-traffic surfaces, a well-compacted crushed-stone base is perfectly sufficient — no cement-treated layer is needed there. Lean concrete comes into play when the loads or the ground conditions call for a stiffer, stronger base. The decision is governed by the expected loading and the quality of the subgrade; you can read more in our article on sub-base thickness.
The cement-treated base is, in short, an intermediate solution between a crushed-stone base and structural concrete: it is useful wherever heavy loads or a weak subgrade require a more stable foundation beneath the pavers.
