A concrete mould is a reusable template with which you can cast concrete pavers and stepping stones at home or in a small workshop. It may be made of plastic, polypropylene, aluminium or even wood — what matters is that it is durable enough to produce many pieces. But is it really worth making your own pavers?
How does it work?
The mould provides a negative of the piece: you fill it with fresh concrete, let it set, lift out the finished element and start again. With a single mould you can produce many identical pieces, or several different patterns. Many moulds combine several motifs on one plate, so you can create a varied surface reminiscent of natural stone.
What is it genuinely good for?
- Stepping stones and garden paths: ideal for foot traffic and decorative walkways between borders.
- Unique shapes and colours: you can pigment the concrete yourself, achieving shades you will not find in the shops.
- A DIY project: anyone who enjoys working in the garden will enjoy the process too.
What to watch when casting
A good result requires a proper concrete mix (water-cement ratio), careful compaction (tapping or vibrating the mould to drive out air bubbles) and a patient curing time. Before pouring, coat the mould with a release agent (oil, for example) so the piece comes out easily. Freshly demoulded elements must cure slowly and covered — especially important in the Málaga summer, when the hot, dry air draws the water out of the concrete far too quickly and causes cracking.
Does it pay off?
If you need many pieces for a large area, home casting is rarely worthwhile because of the time involved — factory pavers are then both cheaper and better. For a small area, a one-off decorative feature, or simply for the pleasure of working with your hands, however, it is a wonderful way to create a personal, unique surface.
