If you're thinking about laying the paving blocks yourself, there are essentially two ways it can end. One: the project finishes with the satisfaction of a job well done and a good sum of money saved. The other: a few years on, you're standing in front of a wavy, sunken surface wondering why you didn't call a professional. Which one comes true depends above all on preparation and patience.
Who should take it on?
DIY paving of a small, regular area — a garden path or a patio, say — is a perfectly realistic undertaking for a handy person. For larger areas that carry car traffic, or where there are serious slopes or drainage challenges — very common on the hillside plots so typical of the province of Málaga — it's worth thinking twice, or at least getting professional help with the design.
The most common amateur mistakes
DIY installations almost always fail at the same points:
- A weak base: neglecting compaction, or skimping on the thickness of the crushed-stone sub-base, is a guaranteed route to sunken pavers.
- No edge restraint: without lateral support, the edges creep apart within a few years.
- Wrong falls: if the water can't drain away, it stands in the joints, breeds slippery algae, and the torrential autumn rains can wash out the base; in the inland comarcas around Ronda and Antequera, the occasional frost can finish the job of prising the surface open.
- Laying on sand without a proper base — in the wrong place: the bedding system is not the same for every pavement and every load.
What tools will you need?
The minimum kit: spade, rake, wheelbarrow, screeding rail, rubber mallet, spirit level, string line and pegs, plus the plate compactor already mentioned. For the cuts, a block splitter or an angle grinder with a diamond blade. And don't forget personal protection: the dust from cutting and the noise are no joke.
A realistic time estimate
Many people underestimate the time required. An average garden path does not get finished in a weekend if you genuinely work to a professional standard. Excavating and compacting the base layers alone can take several days — and at the height of a Málaga summer, working in 35-degree heat stretches every schedule.
