Block paving is steadily replacing plain concrete footpaths, in public spaces and in private courtyards alike — it is durable, attractive and copes well with ground movement. It has one single recurring annoyance: the weeds that keep appearing in the joints. Fortunately there are several ways to fight them — and not necessarily with chemicals.
Why do weeds grow in the joints?
Weeds don't push up from underneath the blocks: they feed on the fine dust and organic debris that collects in the joints. Wherever that material accumulates and gets moisture, a seed takes root. Lasting protection is therefore always about keeping the joint clean and properly filled.
Chemical-free methods
- Hot water or steam: kills the roots and is environmentally friendly, though it needs repeating.
- Joint scraper and wire brush: mechanically removes the weed together with the growing medium it feeds on.
- Pressure washer: cleans the joint thoroughly — but the washed-out sand must be replaced afterwards.
- Gas flame weeder: effective, but use it with great care — in Málaga's dry climate the fire risk is very real, especially in summer.
Weed control with herbicide
If you do opt for chemicals, choose a herbicide expressly approved for use on paved surfaces, and follow the instructions along with Spanish environmental and water-protection regulations. The product can wash into surface water and the ground — a particular concern in coastal municipalities and near watercourses — so apply it sparingly and with judgement.
The lasting solution
The most effective defence is prevention: if you fill the joints with a hardening, weed-resistant jointing compound, weeds simply have nowhere left to grow. Checking the joints once or twice a year and sweeping away accumulated debris is worth more than desperate weeding in mid-summer.
