However well it was laid, sooner or later weeds appear in the joints and along the edges of block paving. The seed arrives on the wind, with the birds, or simply from the surrounding soil — and a little accumulated dust plus some moisture is all it takes to sprout. The good news is that lasting protection exists; you just need to know what each method is good for.
Why does grass grow between the blocks at all?
Weeds don't grow up from beneath the pavers — they root in the fine dirt that collects in the joints. The real solution is therefore always keeping the joint clean and properly filled, not endless weeding.
Mechanical methods
- Joint scraper: regularly scraping out the joints removes both the roots and the built-up dirt.
- Pressure washer: cleans the joint effectively, but handle it with care — it can wash out the jointing sand. Refill the joints after washing.
- Hot water or steam: an eco-friendly, chemical-free solution that kills the roots. It needs several repeat treatments.
The lasting solution: the right joint
The most effective defence is not removal but prevention. If you fill the joints with a special hardening jointing sand or a weed-resistant jointing compound, weeds simply find no place to settle. These products set on contact with water, stay flexible, and resist weed growth for years.
A seasonal routine
It pays to look over the paving twice a year — ideally before the autumn rainy season and again in spring: sweep away accumulated leaves and dust, check the condition of the joints and top up washed-out material where needed, especially after a spell of torrential rain. Those few minutes of maintenance are worth more than spending the summer hunched over the blocks pulling weeds.
