In the province of Málaga, winter doesn't mean snow ploughs and shovels — it means rain. After months of drought the autumn and winter fronts arrive, sometimes as a DANA with torrential downpours, and that is when block paving shows whether it has been looked after. A clean pavement with its drainage in order sails through the winter; a neglected one turns slippery, ponds with water and deteriorates. With a few good habits, winter maintenance is quick, easy and gentle on the paving.
Timing: better before the rain than after
Just as in colder climates it pays to clear snow while it is fresh, the golden rule here is to act before the storm arrives. Dry leaves and dust sweep away effortlessly; soaked, trodden-in leaves turn into a slippery film that multiplies the work. When heavy rain is forecast, it is worth going out twice — before the event to clear the surface and the drainage channels, and afterwards to remove whatever the water has carried in — rather than tackling one compacted layer of mud and leaves.
The right tool
- A stiff broom or yard brush: the number-one ally of the Málaga winter; it shifts leaves, dust and soil without harming the paver surface.
- A plastic scraper or brush: for algae and moss in shaded corners — far better than any metal tool, which scratches and chips the blocks.
- A pressure washer, in moderation: it removes slippery films effectively, but used up close it washes out the jointing sand — top up the joints afterwards.
Slip safety: the right technique
The biggest winter risk here is not ice but a wet surface coated in algae. On the areas you walk every day — the entrance path, the steps, the garage ramp — remove algae and moss as soon as they appear; don't wait for someone to slip. Work in strips, wear footwear with good grip, and on slopes always start at the top so the dirty water doesn't run across the section you've already cleaned. It is moderate but steady physical work: twenty minutes every few weeks beats a whole day's slog after an entire winter's neglect.
Where does the water go?
The key question of a Málaga winter. Before the rainy season, check that the drainage channels, gullies and rainwater outlets are free of leaves and sediment — a single torrential downpour with blocked gratings can flood the plot and wash out the pavement's base. Don't pile your sweepings onto flower beds or against the drains, and think about where the next storm's water will run: far better to decide that yourself than to find out at three in the morning.
